Optical properties of infrared femtosecond laser-modified fused silica and application to waveguide fabrication

چکیده
We investigate the changes in the optical properties of fused silica exposed to intense infrared femtosecond pulses. The laser-induced absorption spectrum reveals the creation of color centers inside the glass matrix, comparable with those observed in ultraviolet-exposed fused silica. The laser-induced absorption is associated with a laser-induced refractive-index change, which can be used for waveguide fabrication. The change in third-order susceptibility in such waveguides is measured by third-harmonic-generation microscopy as a function of the irradiation parameters. © 2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 160.4670, 140.3390.

Femtosecond laser fabrication of integrated optical waveguides and microfluidic channels for lab-on-chip devices
We use a femtosecond laser to fabricate on a glass substrate both microfluidic channels and high quality optical waveguides, intersecting each other. Waveguide-channel integration opens new prospects for in-situ sensing in lab-on-chip devices. Introduction A lab-on-chip (LOC) is a device that squeezes onto a single glass substrate the functionalities of a biological laboratory, by incorporating...

Optical waveguides that incorporate Bragg gratings have been written in bulk fused silica by using the femtosecond laser direct-write method and without the need for lithography or ion-beam techniques. A single manufacturing process is used to create waveguide-Bragg grating reflectors for operation in the C band.

متن کاملInvestigation and control of ultrafast laser-induced isotropic and anisotropic nanoscale-modulated index patterns in bulk fused silica
Ultrafast laser-induced refractive index changes in a-SiO2 consist, depending on the irradiation conditions, of either positive variations, voids, or regular nanoscale patterns, each of these underlying specific structural transformations. These allow for obtaining a large palette of optical functions ranging from low loss guiding to anisotropic scattering. While briefly reviewing the excitatio...

This paper reports on the mechanical properties of fused silica flexures manufactured by a two-step process combining femtosecond lasers exposure below the ablation threshold and chemical etching. Flexural strengths as high as 2.7 GPa were measured, demonstrating that femtosecond lasers can be efficiently used to produce arbitrarily shaped high-strength mechanical devices, opening new opportuni...
